Our Lady of the Rivers Shrine, a historical river landmark.

Located in Portage Des Sioux, MO, the tall white statue is easily seen for miles up and down the Mississippi River.

Directions

Portage des Sioux is located ~12 miles from St. Charles and ~9 miles from West Alton. Take MO-94 to CR J and then 1 mile into Portage des Sioux. Take a right on Common Field Street and go approximately 1/4 mile to Le Seurre Street which leads to shrine on the river.

Hours & Access

Visitors are welcome year round at any time.  Pathway lighting comes on at dusk and turns off dawn.  The site is wheelchair accessible.

Parking

Parking is free. There is a small paved lot directly across the road, just feet from the walkway entrance

ABOUT US

Quick Facts:

  • Our Lady of the Rivers Shrine gets its name from the fact that three major rivers: Illinois, Missouri, and Mississippi, intersect within a few miles of the site. 
  • This historical river landmark is also a dedication to the area's rich history and incredible beauty.
  • The 'River Lady Statue' was designed by Norma McClory, and was constructed of fiberglass by Monsanto Chemical Co. in 1956.
  • It was dedicated in October 13, 1957 by Father Schlattmann, who was instrumental in the river statue being built.
  • The annual Blessing of the Fleet Parade usually happens in July and is a big tourist attraction.
